Tezcatlipoca, divinité mexica associée à la nuit, à la dualité et au destin, signifie
«miroir de fumée» en nahuatl. Cette figure mythologique incarnel’opposition entre lumière et obscurité, un contraste qui structure la composition de l’œuvre.
La scène se divise en deux parties distinctes. À gauche, une nature morte met en avant
un vase bicolore orné de scorpions, symbolisant l’équilibre entrepoison et guérison.
En arrière-plan, un rideau fin, presque un voile, suggère le passage entre le visible
et l’invisible. À droite, une ouverture dévoile un paysage nocturne, illuminé par une lune éclatante. Cette référence au mythe mexicain du lapin dans la lune accentue la dimension légendaire de la scène. L’océan scintillant sous la lumière lunaire invite à la contemplation et à l’introspection, établissant un lien entre l’immensité cosmique et l’univers intérieur.
À travers Tezcatlipoca, Emilia Pesty interroge la notion de reflet et d’identité. Par un jeu de symboles et de contrastes, elle invite le spectateur à une réflexion sur le temps, la mémoire et les forces invisibles qui influencent notre existence.

Tezcatlipoca, a Mexican deity associated with night, duality, and destiny, means “smoking mirror” in Nahuatl. This mythological figure embodies the opposition between light and darkness — a contrast that structures the composition of the work. The scene is divided into two distinct parts. On the left, a still life highlights a two-toned vase adorned with scorpions, symbolizing the balance between poison and healing. In the background, a thin curtain — almost a veil — suggests the passage between the visible and the invisible.
On the right, an opening reveals a nocturnal landscape illuminated by a radiant moon.
This reference to the Mexican myth of the rabbit in the moon enhances the legendary dimension of the scene. The ocean shimmering under the moonlight invites contemplation and introspection, establishing a link between cosmic immensity and the inner world.
